How to Wash Shoes in a Washing Machine: A Material-Safe Guide

A careful, step-by-step guide to washing manufacturer-approved sneakers in a washing machine, including materials, preparation, cycle settings and drying.

Start with the care label—not the washing machine

The safest answer is specific to the shoe. Check the stitched label, packaging, or manufacturer’s online care instructions before using a washer. If the brand says hand-wash, spot-clean, or do not machine-wash, follow that instruction. A laundry bag can cushion and contain a pair, but it cannot make a non-washable shoe machine-safe.

Quick answer: Machine-wash only manufacturer-approved canvas, mesh, knit, or synthetic shoes. Remove loose grit, laces, and insoles; use a secure shoe laundry bag; select cold water and a gentle cycle; then air-dry.

The seven-step method

  1. Check construction. Avoid leather, suede, delicate trim, lights, electronics, loose embellishments, and unknown adhesives.
  2. Remove dry debris. Brush mud, stones, and grit from the outsole so they do not circulate through the washer.
  3. Take out laces and insoles. Wash compatible laces separately and clean insoles according to their own care directions.
  4. Pretreat only when appropriate. Test any cleaner on a hidden area and follow both the footwear and detergent labels.
  5. Use a shoe washing bag. Load without forcing the zipper. Bulky or high-top shoes may need one bag per shoe.
  6. Choose conservative settings. Cold water and a gentle cycle reduce heat and agitation. Samsung’s sneaker-care guidance also recommends a laundry bag or pillowcase to reduce tub impact.
  7. Reshape and air-dry. Remove the pair promptly, reshape it, and let it dry naturally away from high heat.

Why preparation matters

A wash cycle is not a substitute for removing grit or treating a concentrated stain. Loose debris can move through the machine, while caked mud may simply redistribute. Preparation also gives you a chance to inspect weak seams, peeling trim, or exposed adhesive before agitation begins.

What a shoe wash bag changes

A basic mesh pouch primarily keeps shoes and laces contained. KicksSpin adds a dense chenille lining and cushioned structure around compatible sneakers while breathable mesh allows wash water to circulate. That makes it a practical upgrade from a loose pillowcase when machine washing is already permitted.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using hot water without explicit manufacturer approval
  • Putting leather or suede into the washer
  • Leaving stones or heavy mud in the tread
  • Overfilling the bag or forcing the zipper
  • Using high dryer heat
  • Assuming every sneaker from one brand has the same instructions

After the cycle

Open the bag immediately, check the shoe’s shape, and air-dry every component separately. Rinse loose residue from the bag if necessary and hang it by its loops so the fibers dry completely before storage.

One wash-day upgrade. Six ways to spin it.

Choose the color that fits your rotation. Every option uses the same soft chenille contact, breathable structure, and covered zipper.
